Snoop Dogg
Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr. (born October 20, 1971), better known by his stage name Snoop Dogg, is a Grammy Award-nominated American rapper, record producer, and actor. Snoop is best known as an MC in the West Coast hip hop scene, and for being one of producer Dr. Dre’s most notable protégés.
His mother nicknamed him “Snoopy” as a child because of the way he dressed and because of his love of the cartoon Peanuts. When he began recording, he took the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg. He shortened his name to Snoop Dogg in 1998 when he left his original record label Death Row Records and signed with No Limit Records. He popularized the catch phrase suffix “-izzle,” a slang term developed by Oakland, California rap group 3X Krazy in the mid-1990s and used by Bay Area rapper E-40.
Awarded the title of “Stoner of the Year” by High Times magazine in March 2002, Snoop said, “I was having fun when I was getting high. Don’t regret none of the times I was on it. That was me, Snoop Dogg: Stoner of the Year.” He has appeared on the cover of High Times twice.
Snoop admitted he was doing anti-drug ads while getting high himself. “I used to do public service announcements and tell the kids, ‘Say no to drugs,’ and I was high as fuck! Very hypocritical.”
Snoop has also been charged with possession a few times, in December 2001, after Ohio state troopers searched his tour bus and found about 200 grams of bud. The bust occurred while Snoop was travelling with his “Puff, Puff, Pass” tour. His tour the year previously was called “Up In Smoke.” Since 2006, Snoop Dogg has been arrested for marijuana three times.
In 2008 on The Larry King Show Snoop publicized “I’m on medical marijuana as we speak”
he then goes on to say “I don’t drink at all anymore. I just have a medical condition where I need to have medical marijuana in my life.” and then continues to say “It’s only medical, no street weed.”
2008 was a big year for Snoop. His album, Ego Trippin’, features fellow famous stoner Willie Nelson in the song “My Medicine”.
